Our operatives use high pressure water jet equipment to clear any blockages with the minimum of inconvenience to you. Once the drains are clear, we can use CCTV drainage cameras to understand why the blockage occurred in the first place. This will enable you to take the correct measures to stop something similar from happening again in the future. In some cases we will use these techniques before attempting to unblock the drain if we feel there is something causing the problem we need to understand.

Understanding how blocked drains occur

What Are The Main Causes Of Blocked Pipes And Clogged Drains?

Blocked drains are a nuisance all round, so it makes sense to try to understand why they occur.

Outdoor drain blockages are more likely to be caused by build-up of leaves or garden debris, or even tree roots that have worked their way into drainage pipes. As a matter of routine, you should always keep drains free from foliage and garden waste that could be washed into the drain. Problems with indoor drains are usually the cause of something that was flushed down the sink or toilet.

Indoor drain blockages typically occur because of a problem with kitchen, bathroom or toilet drains. Blocked bathroom or toilet drains are typically due to incorrect items put down the toilet. It is worth pointing out that you should never attempt to flush away nappies, sanitary pads or tampons, face wipes, cotton wool, hair or excessive amounts of toilet paper – all of these can clog up the loo.

The culprit for blocked kitchen drains is usually food particles – particularly kitchen grease, coffee grounds and bits of leftover food – that can build up over time and cause a blockage. It’s really important to monitor what goes down the sink!

Risks of DIY Solutions

Whilst unblocking a drain yourself may seem like the more cost effective option, DIY solutions can often do more harm than good, necessitating significantly costlier repairs.

Attempting to unblock a drain yourself can compact the blockage instead of removing it, making the problem more complicated to resolve, and using aggressive chemicals and improper, makeshift tools in the process can cause expensive corrosion or cracks in your drainage system. Even if your DIY method seems to address the problem, it could leave underlying issues undiagnosed, leading to dangerous consequences down the road.

By choosing a professional drain company, you ensure the blockage is cleared safely, effectively, and without any unnecessary risk or cost.

Blockage vs Damage

A blockage is usually caused by a buildup of grease or debris, leading to slow drainage, foul smells, and gurgling sounds. On the other hand, damage is more serious, usually involving cracked, collapsed, or misaligned pipes. Most of the time, blockages can be easily located and cleared by a professional, whereas pipe damage is more difficult to diagnose and resolve and often requires a CCTV survey.

If you’re unsure what is causing your drainage problem, we’re here to help with fast, effective solutions for diagnosing and fixing your issue.

What To Expect

We understand that dealing with a blocked drain can be stressful. When you get in touch with us, our team will listen carefully and empathically to your issue, provide a clear cost estimate over the phone, and let you know how long the job is likely to take.

If you’re happy to go ahead, we’ll take your booking details and arrange a convenient time to visit. For callouts, we aim to attend the very same day whenever possible, depending on our availability and the time of your call.

On arrival, our engineers will carry out a thorough diagnosis, unblock the drain using the most effective methods, and ensure everything is running smoothly before leaving. We’ll also offer practical advice on how to help prevent further blockages in the future.

Eco-Friendly Methods

At The Drain Guys, we always aim to use the most environmentally friendly methods available. Where possible, our engineers use mechanical techniques to clear blockages.

When that isn’t suitable, we rely on high-pressure water jetting: a powerful, chemical-free method that restores flow safely and effectively. We never use harsh chemicals to clear drains, ensuring our services are safe for your property, your pipes, and the environment.

CCTV Drain Survey

CCTV drain surveys are used to provide you with a fast and accurate assessment of the condition of the drains so that we can understand exactly how and why the blockage is occurring. Once we have this information, we can use it to find an effective solution so that we can remove the issue and get your drainage system back to normal.

If you need a CCTV drain survey, please get in contact with our team today.

FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions
about Blocked Drains

Do You Charge A Call Out Fee For A Blocked Drain?

We do not charge a call out fee! The fee is quoted before the job is undertaken usually during a phone call with the customer then it is confirmed once we are at the site. No work is undertaken without the fixed price being quoted and accepted. We do also offer free site visits for quotes on larger jobs.

Do You Need To Do A CCTV Drain Survey?

Not every job we go to needs a CCTV survey. In many situations a blacked drain is very clear and easy to diagnose due to various signs we know to look out for. However, in some circumstances we need to use CCTV technology to explore the drain further and find out why the drain isn’t allowing proper water flow. By doing a CCTV survey we can often identify a larger underlying problem that might have been missed by simply jetting the drain and getting things moving. By identifying these more serious issues we can often help you save money in the long run.

How Do I Prevent A Blocked Drain In The Future?

In terms of normal drain blockages you can simply be more careful about what goes into your drains. Fat and other food wastes should be kept out of the sink and away from drain where ever possible. By looking at what you put into your drains and understanding what causes blockages you can avoid many of the common issues in the future. In some cases the drain is blocked because of tree roots or pipe damage which cannot be prevented in the same way. Objects going into outside drains like toys and balls can be avoided and are common reasons for a blocked drain.

Are There Any Hidden Charges?

No. We make sure all the costs related to a job are clearly discussed and understood. All standard blockages are done on a fixed agreed price. However, any unusual or additional problems will be discussed and quoted on site before any work is undertaken. These can include damage to the pipe rather than a simple blockage.

Do You Have Any Reviews?
